Congratulations to the winners of the thirtysomething first season DVD giveaway and thanks, as always, to the Shout Factory for sending over the copies. Winners this week are Sean Au (San Francisco), Jake Lurie (Goodyear, AZ) and Melissa McCartney (Louisville, KY). Ready for another chance to win?
The cast of the CW's 90210
I’ve made no secret about my dark, tortured past (kidding!) on the original Beverly Hills 90210 and I was skeptical when the CW gave the series a reboot last year and brought us 90210. New actors, new characters and a few that look familiar (Jennie Garth is a semi-regular and Shannon & Tori both made appearances during the first season) and while I didn’t embrace it like a long-lost child, a lot of people did and the show was a hit for the CW. As the second season gears up to premiere on September 8th (along with the latest remake – Melrose Place) I have three copies of the first season of the new 90210 to giveaway.
Super easy to enter – just email me at jim@progressivepulse.com and that’s it! Do it before midnight EST on Wednesday, September 2nd and you’re entered! Good luck!
DVD Pick of the Week: Some television series fall into the traps of its genre and never take advantage of the fact that it’s OK to stretch the limits and step outside the genre box once in awhile. The CW’s Supernatural has definitely not been trapped by the restraints of being just a carbon copy sci-fi/fantasy drama series. As the fourth season comes to DVD on Tuesday, this is a series that is definitely worth checking out.
Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki
For those unfamiliar, brothers Dean (Jared Padalecki) and Sam (Jenson Ackles) spend their days hunting ghosts, vampires, witches and a variety of (super cool) dark spirits. They don’t do this just because they like to – it’s part of a family legacy that they are constantly finding out more and more about. In fact, the fourth season delves even deeper as far as shedding more light on the boys’ parents and their own existence in the world. Oh, and Dean kicks off season 4 having been resurrected from Hell by Sam, who suddenly happens to have powers that increase daily. Did Sam make a deal with the devil or the Angels? The season explores all that as well as culminating in a fight between Heaven and Hell that could destroy the world.
Supernatural Season 4 is available this Tuesday from Warner Brothers Home Video. For even more on this terrific series, visit www.supernaturaldvd.com.
Angus T. Jones, Jon Cryer & Charlie Sheen
As the sixth season of CBS’s uber-successful Two and a Half Men began (the DVD of the season is out on Tuesday), it looked as though Charlie (Charlie Sheen) may have finally turned a leaf and hung up his party-boy ways. Chelsea (played by Jennifer Bini Taylor) is a smart, independent woman who Charlie is suddenly making tea for when she’s sick, happy to miss watching ESPN in bed and makes the ultimate sacrfice – delete the nudie pix off his cell phone! Charlie isn’t the one going through changes during the sixth season. Alan (Jon Cryer) dates his receptionist only to end up in bed with her frisky mom. Jake (Angus T. Jones) is also growing up and locking lips with the cute girl next door. And Judith (Marin Hinkle) has her baby, whose parentage is unknown (but kind of looks like Alan!).
While some series start to lose steam by year six, Two and a Half Men found new ways to mine laughs while making the characters grow up just enough. The sixth season DVD is available on Tuesday from Warner Brothers Home Video. For more on the show, visit the official website, www.twoandahalfmen.com.
Until next week…keep watching!
