Julie Benz and Michael C Hall are ready for a killer 4th season.
DEXTER returns: As the fourth season kicks off this Sunday on Showtime, things have definitely changed for serial killer Dexter Morgan (Emmy nominee Michael C. Hall). Married with children now and living in a suburban paradise with clueless Rita (Julie Benz), Dexter’s worlds are running parallel and getting closer and closer to crossing. All the changes have definitely thrown Dexter off his game both as a blood splatter expert and as the murderer who takes care of other serial killers for the good of Miami society. Longtime fans will love the faux opening sequence that clearly shows where Dexter is after sleep deprived nights trying to keep baby Harrison happy but when he is on the phone singing his baby to sleep while looking at photographs of brutal murder victims you know he’s not going to be able to stay off his game for long.
It's a new side of John Lithgow on DEXTER
But, on the flipside, this is Dexter and the chills come almost immediately in the opening of the season premiere and if you still think of John Lithgow as the goofy alien on Third Rock From the Sun you’ll never look at him the same way again. Lithgow joins the cast as Arthur Mitchell, a killer who happens to have a long history of eluding Special Agent Lundy (the returning Keith Carradine). Mitchell’s m.o. is murdering in threes (hence the name “Trinity Killer”) and has been doing so for the last 30 years without every being caught. Will Dexter be the one to finally bring him down or will their unexpected kinship get in the way as the season unfolds? Trust me, though, the opening scene with Mitchell and one of his victims is not unsettling because of Lithgow’s unexpected nude scene but…well, just watch…with your eyes ready to be covered. While Dexter often is unsettling, seeing a serial killer kill without knowing his motives is a new thing for the show, especially when such a familiar face as Lithgow is the one holding the razor.
Also in the new season is the secret relationship between Detective Angel Batista (David Zayas) and Lt. Maria LaGuerta (Lauren Velez). Dexter’s sister Deb (Jennifer Carpenter, Hall’s new bride in real life) is set to learn more about her family’s past (Adrienne Barbeau alert!) as well as hooking up again with Lundy. As expected with the Showtime series, there are sure to be more surprises and the season premiere definitely whets the appetite for more, more, more.
While Dexter is not for the faint at heart, the show excels at making Hall’s character someone you root for and even sympathize with despite his killing tendencies. The fourth season shows no signs of an aging show but yet another chapter in a thrilling, unique drama with an edge.
Dexter airs Sundays on Showtime at 9/8c.
