10 Reasons why THE VAMPIRE DIARIES is the must-see of the new fall season

by Jim on September 9, 2010 · 14 comments

[NOTE on 10/20/10: Since it caused an uproar last time I posted it, why not stir up the True Blood kids again with what I say in this piece. Also, if you missed my Kevin Williamson interview from earlier this week, check it out RIGHT HERE]

This is the kind of blog post I wake up early to write because the thoughts have been going through my head since my first viewing of the 2nd season premiere of the CW’s The Vampire Diaries screener this past weekend.  Don’t worry – NO SPOILERS

Nina Dobrev and Ian Somerhalder in the upcoming 'Bad Moon Rising' episode

10. A NO KILL RULE DOESN’T EXIST. We learned from the early 1st season killing of Vicki (who was so great!) that nobody is truly safe in Mystic Falls. And this goes for the 2nd season premiere, too. *hint hint*

9. BSG (no, not Battlestar Galactica) – unlike the pretty but oh-so-boring Twilight movies, TVD understands if you’re going to make anything with vampires, these three elements -BLOOD, SEX, GORE – are a MUST. Now, we don’t see these things in every episode but they are always present in the oh-so-wonderful subtext. Sometimes less IS more and TVD gets that. (To be clear, that doesn’t mean we want to see the guys wearing shirts all the time, okay?

8. OLD FASHIONED MOMENTS – there’s nothing better than moments where someone is lurking behind an unsuspecting character or the audience sees someone about to do something very bad and you can’t help but squirm in your seat.

7. PROMISES, PROMISES – Co-creators Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec have become experts with teasing the fans via Twitter (not following them? WTF? @kevwilliamson and @julieplec…go do it NOW, then come back) but their teases are never empty. Respect all around.

Michael Trevino's Tyler is a much bigger part of Season Two

6. PRETTY RULES BUT…the actors on TVD can all act. Having met most of the cast at Comic Con (Ian!!!  You’ve eluded me thus far!) they are just as beautiful in person, nicer than their dark characters but they’re also truly professionals. It shows at press events and it shows on the screen. And, another kudos for casting, Taylor Kinney looks great but also effortlessly becomes part of the fold. And most of last season I hoped Michael Trevino and Steven R. McQueen would get more airtime and it appears my wish has been granted.

5.  BROTHERLY LOVE. The core of the show to me isn’t who Elena will inevitably choose (and I suspect the attraction she DOES have to Damon will keep throwing her off throughout the course of the entire series) but the realtionship between brothers Damon and Stefan. And while the boys have been working together much more lately, leave it to Katherine to stir the pot between them again.

4. ELENA & KATHERINE. Nina Dobrev must be having the time of her life playing sweet Elena and the devilish Katherine. I can’t say much about Katherine’s presence but this isn’t just a one-off episode that is quickly resolved. And, so far, some of Katherine’s snarkier lines rival Damon’s.  Thumbs way up.

3. WRITING. Williamson, Plec and their writing staff are obviously fans of the genre and have figured out what the fans want and then take things a step further so expectations are always exceeded. Master of their craft every last one of them.

Will Paul Wesley's Stefan live happily ever after with Elena? Don't count on it.

2.  IT’S NOT TRUE BLOOD (and that’s a good thing) – Having been a fan of both shows since their respective beginnings, I’ll come right out and say that The Vampire Diaries is the better show. TB may be on HBO so you can see more nudity, the goriest gore and raw sex but anyone who knows me knows it always comes down to that one element – STORY. While TB relishes the over-the-top often-comedic moments, the storylines are also largely forgettable and in the long run, I predict that people will be talking about the happenings in Mystic Falls much longer than Bon Temps.

1. THE ROLLERCOASTER IS FINE-TUNED. There is a lot that happens in every episode of TVD but it never comes off feeling rushed, convoluted or random like what happened with another uber-popular show during its first season – Glee, a show I hope in its second season reigns it in and figures out how to shape an episode and service story before any song, dance and unnecessary tribute episodes. I have to say that while critics like yours truly have been going gaga (pun intended) about The Vampire Diaries season premiere, this time the excitement, anticipation and praise is not empty. The show lives up to the promise it has set up for itself and that, my friends, is all that any fan asks of its show. Bravo!

The Vampire Diaries season premiere airs tonight at 8/7c on the CW.

Thank you so much for backing my belief that TVD is better than that other vampire show, TB. I’ve been saying this for MONTHS. Can’t wait for The Return!

I am about to die in anticipation, man. GREAT article and I agree with you on all points! 7pm can’t get here quick enough…

Great article – I think you hit on all the reasons why I like it. 🙂

Sorri i Disagree True Blood is Way Better Than vampire Diaries although TVD is really good it’s not nearly as Good as True Blood

Irina September 9, 2010 at 8:38 pm

I think you are right. The writers of TVD are doing a better job than TB. Alan Ball and his obsession with Stephen Moyer are killing the show. Sookie only says Beeeeeeeeeeeel. Bill only says Sookeh is mine! Please, come on. An actress like Anna Paquin, with her talent, reduce to that, is ludicrous. Nina as Elena/Katherine will humiliated Sookeh this season!

The only reason I watch TB is Eric Northman. If TVD steals him, I’m all yours TVD!

You have to be joking!
You find the “evil twin” scenario of Elena and Katherine compelling?
I’ve tried watching Vampires diaries and find every character other than Damon to be VAPID.
Elena and Katherine are both boring and one dimensional.
If you seriously believe what you’ve written you must have the mentality of an 8th grader.
But I mean that in the nicest possible way.

Oh, and as for “quality writing” The vamps all have “magic rings” that allow them to walk in the daylight?
What exactly is the draw back to being a vamp here?
You stay young and beautiful forever and live on a liquid protein diet?

@Maureen If you are sooooo depressed by what you read hear go to a True Blood site! Elena character is looking better than Sookie!

maureen September 11, 2010 at 2:05 pm

For your information Nancy V., Jim Halterman came unto a SUPERNATURAL site to tag his column, and direct us here.
And no, the thoughts and opinions expressed here do not “depress”me.You aren’t that important.
Oh,and Sookie is played by an academy award winning actress!
I doubt that will EVER be true of the girl playing Elena!

Jim September 11, 2010 at 4:37 pm

Let’s play nice, kids. No reason to get insulting. Conversation is good. Insults are not. Peace!

Hm.It’s a pretty awesome show, but to say it’s better than True Blood is a stretch. Both are inherently too different to be compared, just because they both are vamp-oriented.Still,your opinion.

RJ October 19, 2010 at 12:51 pm

You got Almost all the points right. But you can’t compare TVD with TB,too much difference in concept and storyline. I Personally Love TVD better than TB.But I ain’t gonna argue that. BUT gotta say this: Referring 2 Anna Paquin that’s she’s better than Nina Dobrev just because she won a award like 1000 years ago is so lame!!! Nina is a wonderfull actress wit a lot of potential.I ain’t saying Paquin isn’t good,we all know how she acts. Much Love for TVD !!!
