Thanks to EVERYONE who took the time to send in vote after vote after vote in the Top 10 Prime Time Hunks of All Time poll! You all showed your love in true TV-lovers form and should be patting yourselves on the back (go ahead, use your remote if nobody else is around.) Be warned…there are a few surprises coming (not enough votes to get Jon Hamm or David Boreanaz on the list?! Shocker!) and while the majority of the following are more contemporary than classic, this was a readers’ poll so don’t blame me! Between direct emails, Twitter, Facebook and, of course, leaving comments right here, I have compiled your Top 10. Let me know what you think and, above all, enjoy the next 10 HUNKS of eye candy!
10. TOM SELLECK: Did you know that Tom Selleck starred in six failed television pilots before he struck gold with Magnum PI on CBS (1980-1988). Selleck was probably the biggest star of the 1980s and he still continues to be a big draw on television whether he’s guest-starring on Friends, Las Vegas and the still-popular Jesse Stone series of television movies.
9. TAYLOR KITSCH: Kitsch may have started off as an Abercrombie & Fitch model but he quickly proved himself as more than a pretty face and stunning physique as Tim Riggins on the NBC drama Friday Night Lights. While Kitsch is leaving the series after the end of the current season airing right now (its 4th), a feature film career is already underway with a prominent role in last years X Men Origins: Wolverine and has several more projects coming to theaters soon.
8. JENSEN ACKLES: Like many popular actors in film and television, Jensen Ackles got his start in acting by starring as Eric Brady on NBC’s Days Of Our Lives for three years (1997-2000). The Dallas-born Ackles then bounced around a few shows (like Dawson’s Creek) before striking gold in 2005 with the CW series Supernatural co-starring fellow hunk (and one that nearly made this list), Jared Padalecki. While Supernatural is sure to run a few more seasons, Ackles easily will be in the public eye for a long time.
7. SHEMAR MOORE: Moore was a model and then soap opera star (on CBS’s The Young and the Restless) before he moved over to prime time with the crime drama hit Criminal Minds in 2005. As Derek Morgan, Moore has shown that his charisma goes way beyond his body and smile (though they don’t hurt) and he’s shown a strong acting talent on the show as well as in some of his feature films like Tyler Perry’s Diary of a Mad Black Woman. For now, Moore is content on Criminal Minds but his career (and popularity) is probably just getting started.
6. IAN SOMERHALDER: Louisiana native Somerhalder was already known to audiences before last fall when the CW premiered a little show called The Vampire Diaries. Whether it was for his modeling, early acting roles in the feature film Life As A House or as Boone on the mega-hit Lost, Somerhalder was always destined for greatness, right? Unfortunately, Boone died during the first season Lost so what would take Somerhalder to the next level in terms of his career and popularity? Why not play a vampire in the midst of a resurgence of vampire projects like True Blood and the Twilight series? As Damon Salvatore, Somerhalder gets to be nasty, conniving but then show his softer side in his love for his past love, Katherine, who happens to look like his brother’s girlfriend Elena. Season Two of Vampire Diaries will start this fall and Somerhalder is sure to keep making his fans stand at attention!
5. JAMES RODAY: While James Roday doesn’t play a character that is your typical crime drama hunk (he’s not necessarily suave, debonair or macho…well, unless that’s part of his cover on the USA detective series PSYCH.) Instead, Roday playing fake psychic Shawn Spencer actually does manage to somehow solve the crimes at hand despite repeated cultural references and playing with his partner-in-(solving) crime, Gus (Dule Hill). What makes Roday sexy is that he’s not the stereotypical macho man on TV but, instead, is the antithesis, which makes him sexy.
4. CHRIS MELONI: Meloni was pulling double duty on television in 1999 when the actor was working on the HBO series OZ, as bi-sexual (and often naked) murderer Chris Keller, and started work on what would be his longest role to date in Law & Order: Special Victims Unit on NBC. While Oz ended in 2003, Meloni will be entering season 12 this fall as Elliot Stabler and he’s still just as interesting and just as sexy as he was when the show began. It doesn’t hurt that underneath the all-business Stabler, we know that Meloni is a lover of life, a devoted father and, hell, just look at that smile!!
3. PAUL WESLEY: Wesley wasn’t too well-known a year ago except for fans of his early career work in daytime soaps, various prime time guest spots, a recurring role on 24, and the ABC Family series, Fallen. It took his turn as the vampire-with-a-conscience on the CW series Vampire Diaries to launch Wesley into the crazy-high levels of superstardom. Fans can’t get enough of the show, the stars (Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev, to name a few) and with a second season coming this fall, Vampire Diaries should reach new ratings heights and, of course, new heights in fame as Wesley shows us that he is just as adept at handling the delicious shirtless scenesas well as those where he literally gets to chew the scenery and show what a great actor he is, too!
2. MATT BOMER: While many on this list are newcomers to the television fame game, Matt Bomer is someone who feels like he’s been around much longer than he has because he slid in off the radar with ease and finesse. Sure a few years back he was almost the new Superman (but when directors changed Brandon Routh got the role) and had a recurring role on NBC’s Chuck but Bomer became the role of con-artist Neal Caffrey the minute he stepped in front of the camera in the White Collar pilot. It doesn’t hurt that his blue eyes are intoxicating and Neal somehow finds time to hit the gym but Bomer is everything a true TV star is -good looks combined with a natural charisma and a talent for acting that seems effortless. Season 2 beings July 13th – I don’t know about you but I know what I’ll be doing that night!
and the number 1 PRIME TIME TV HUNK OF ALL TIME is……ALEX O’LOUGHLIN!! For those of you who may not know O’Loughlin (and that number is growing less daily thanks to the upcoming Hawaii Five-0) , O’Loughlin had already been known in his native Australia before he first hit American audiences on FX’s crime drama The Shield and then as the lead in the vampire drama Moonlight, which was cancelled after one season. O’Loughlin then took the lead in last fall’s CBS medical drama Three Rivers but, again, that show didn’t catch on overall with audiences and was cancelled. Alex kept busy co-starring with Jennifer Lopez in this spring’s feature film The Back-Up Plan which showed his talent for comedy and made use of his physical assets (wouldn’t you?). However, Hawaii Five-0 finds O’Loughlin playing the iconic role of Steve McGarrett (originally played by Jack Lord) and given a plum time slot (Mondays at 10, which had served super hit CSI: Miami very well) the show has everything going for it, including great co-stars in Scott Caan, Daniel Dae Kim (someone else who almost made this list!) and BSG‘s Grace Park. Time will tell how big of a hit the new show is but my prediction is that Alex O’Loughlin will be an American household name in no time…his fans (who voted daily in droves) have known all this for a loooooooong time. Congrats, Alex!
