Tom Hardy (l) and Joel Edgarton (r) play brothers battling each other in WARRIOR

In the closing sequence of Warrior, two hulking men, eight packs glistening from sweat, face-off in a boxing ring with more raging testosterone than found in a dozen Rocky pictures. Both are weary, having endured a grueling competition to get to this final round in a mixed martial arts championship; and both are wary of each other, having a complicated history that dates back to their childhood. Oh, yes, they’re brothers – Tommy and Brendan Conlon – working class men from Pittsburgh – who, because of an acrimonious divorce, became separated as teenagers and no longer spoke to one another. Over those 17-years of separation, Tommy became a family man and high school teacher, while Brendan entered the Marines and fought in Iraq. But, as they face-off, there’s little brotherly love in the ring.

The pair is played by two relative newcomers – Australian Joel Edgarton and British Tom Hardy. What brings them together is the chance to win a multi-million dollar prize at a mixed martial arts championship called Sparta. While that’s not giving much away from what we’ve seen in the trailer, this is more than a mere fight film as the story goes much deeper and examines the relationships between the two brothers as well as the fractured relationship with their recovering alcoholic father (played by Nick Nolte).

As you can tell from the film’s movie poster, the demands on the actors were much, much more than just learning their lines. With Hardy and Edgerton each gaining more than 20 lbs of muscle…CLICK HERE TO CONTINUE
