Yes, I actually told Jonathan Groff during our interview that Looking is the gay show I’ve always wanted. He replied that hearing that made him want to cry. And I meant every word of it. Never a diehard Queer As Folk fan and currently appalled at how un-entertaining Sean Saves The World continues to be, Looking delivers.

If you haven’t heard, Looking focuses on three gay men living in San Francisco and where the show, created by Michael Lannan, gets it right is that while the men are openly gay (and there are no coming out stories), the show is really about their friendship and the guys’ journey to figuring out what they want in love, jobs and life.

Besides the charming Groff as Patrick, Frankie J. Alvarez plays Agustin, Patricks BFF and former roommate who is moving in with his boyfriend (O-T Fagbenie) and Murray Bartlett, who is about to turn 40 and trying to navigate getting older and realizing your dreams may not be coming true. And Lauren Weedman almost steals the show as the speaks-the-truth Doris, Dom’s former GF and current roomie and BFF. (Russell Tovey doesn’t show up until episode 3, FYI)

Having seen the first four episodes, it sure didn’t feel like work to do all the coverage on the show that I’ve already done…and there’s definitely more to come as the episodes roll out.

First up, my chat with Groff, which goes down as one of my favorite 1:1 chats in my career and then I also talked to Alvarez who surprised me when he told me he’s straight (a fact I didn’t know beforehand). I also wrote up an “11 Things We Know About Looking” which teases the show a bit more.

Watch for interviews with Bartlett, Lannan and Director Andrew Haigh coming soon.

Looking airs Sundays at 10:30pm on HBO right after Girls.
